Definition and History of Podcasts You Need to Know

In the last three years, the popularity of podcasts in Indonesia has been proving more and more promising charts. Many content creators include triggering podcasts to attract a large number of listeners along with them. Not only that, new communities have emerged who are fond of podcasts. In fact, there are even audio player applications specifically for playing podcast recordings. It can be said, the podcast is now a place with very promising potential.

What are Podcasts?

A podcast or podcast is an audio recording discussing a particular topic, such as lifestyle or horror stories, that can be listened to on demand via the internet. With the on demand format, podcasts can be listened to whenever and wherever the listener wants them. In addition, listeners can also play back recordings repeatedly without having to wait for radio-style broadcast hours. For example, a listener could play a horror podcast before bed or a podcast on investing topics on the way home from work. This flexibility is what makes podcasts so loved by many people.

History of the Emergence of Podcasts

The term podcast is confiscated from the words “iPod” and “broadcast”. As the name implies, around the early 2000s podcasts were popular among users of the iPod, a device from Apple that can play audio files in mp3 format. Generally, podcasts are listened to through streaming service applications. However, in those days, people had to download podcasts from blogs and play them on iPods because the internet speed was not enough for streaming. With internet speed increasing year by year, this formality of downloading is gradually being abandoned. Even so, the term podcast has never changed since it was adopted in 2004.

Although podcasts in Indonesia have only become famous in recent years, their existence has emerged with the presence of the Apa Apa Podcast by Boy Avianto in 2005. At that time, the man who is familiarly called Avi also used a blog to publish the podcasts he created. He did this activity to fill his free time while writing his thesis in Germany. Avi includes recording podcasts along with simple steps, such as recording with a PDA (personal device assistant). Then, he edited the recording together with the Audacity application.

Regardless of his intentions, this story from Avi can serve as a lesson that the most important thing in starting a podcast is having the courage to start first. Now, the presence of technology is increasingly qualified. This means that listening to and triggering podcasts can be carried out very easily. Armed with our gadgets and internet packages, we can listen to our favorite podcasts without having to bother downloading the files. Also, anyone can now trigger a podcast as more and more platforms are offering interesting features.
