Make a bounce pass. Hold the ball the same way you would if you were trying to squeeze it. About midway between you and your partner, bounce the ball off the ground and onto another player. Practice making the pass so it only bounces once and comes up comfortably to your partner’s chest. Practice with one and two hands for the bouncing pass.
Shooting
Straight with the basket every time you shoot. Anytime you want to shoot, it’s important to “balance,” meaning you need to point both sets of toes so they point straight at the hoop, then align your hips so you’re aiming to line up your front side with the hoop. Your shots will be more accurate when you are straight, if you follow the correct basic techniques for shooting.
When you’re getting ready to take your shot, stop dribbling and take the ball in both hands, and straight to the hoop. Practice your pitching step, where you take one dribble and change your hips in one fast motion.
Balance on the ball in your dominant hand. The shooting hand is your dominant hand, the hand you use to write and to dribble comfortably. Keep your elbows for shooting tight at your hips, and keep the ball balanced on your fingertips under the basket. Bring it even with your chin and bending your knees, squatting down.
Your strength will come with your shooting hand, but you can stabilize the ball and balance it using your other hand. Touch the ball gently with the other hand on the side of the ball. All the power from the shot should come from your other hand.
To practice your shooting move, lie on the ground with the ball and hold the ball straight up with your shooting hand. Practice rolling the ball straight up in the air a few inches with a backwards twist, right back into your hands.
Rolling the ball from your hand. When you have the ball in the proper shooting position, extend your elbow to shoot straight up and forward, scrolling your wrist forward, as if you were trying to pick up a cookie jar on a high shelf. Continue extending arms to shoot toward the hoop. Let the ball spring forward as your arms extend to the end, rolling back as you let go. Keep following it through your hands, placing it in the cookie jar, after you release the ball.
Pushing off with your feet, jump straight up. To get extra power from your shot, squat down and pop your feet up as you shoot. When your arms get to their highest point, you should jump a bit, extend your legs and put some extra strength under the shot with your jump.
Don’t jump forward, towards the hoop, jump straight up. This is a common mistake among beginners. You want to jump straight up in the air and arc the ball toward the goal, don’t start out in front.
